Twin Cities Senior Care Organization Awards Youth $6,000 in Scholarships
Saint Therese presents educational scholarships to local youth volunteers.
Brooklyn Park, Minn., April 18, 2016—Saint Therese, a faith-based senior care and housing organization, awarded four $1,500 educational scholarships to youth volunteers for their service to seniors.
The scholarship recipients took part in an essay contest, writing about their service and experiences volunteering with older adults. The recipients volunteered to help seniors at a food shelf, senior living centers and living in their neighborhoods.
“Volunteering with and beside the elderly has made me want to work harder and give of myself more”,
Lucas Robinson, age 14.
On April 12, Saint Therese hosted a celebration to honor the youth volunteers. Nearly 30 people attended and had the opportunity to meet the outstanding youth and hear inspiring words from their essays. Saint Therese is grateful for the time and commitment of all volunteers.
The 2015-16 Saint Therese Youth Volunteer Scholarship Recipients are:
Lucas Robinson, age 14, Rockford, Minn.
Madison Renberg, age 14, Hudson, Wis.
Nathan Varvel, age 17, Bloomington, Minn.
Francis Floeder, age 18, Shoreview, Minn.
“It is wonderful to see the intergenerational relationships forming on our campuses and in the community,” said Barbara Rode, Saint Therese President & CEO. “The exchange of knowledge, ideas and values has a powerful impact on both the youth and the senior. It is a pleasure to recognize these relationships and honor youth who have taken the initiative to volunteer.”
About the Saint Therese Youth Volunteer Scholarship
The Youth Volunteer Scholarship recognizes intergenerational relationships and encourages youth to engage with older adults. Earlier this year, Saint Therese held a contest for youth ages 12 to 18 years old. Participants volunteered 20 hours or more and submitted a written essay demonstrating how volunteering with an older adult impacted their life.
